A group of actors will make a break from tradition by putting on a play with a difference. For the first time in more than 50 years of existence, Menston Thespians will perform a show ‘in the round’ rather than in their usual format.
It means the audience will surround the stage for the performances of Pack of Lies later this month at the Kirklands Community Centre, Main Street, Menston.
The play, by Hugh Whitemore, centres on the events surrounding the Portland Spy Ring in 1961 when Peter and Helen Kroger were arrested as spies.
The news shocked the inhabitants of the London suburb of Ruislip as the couple were suspected of working for the Russians and passing on naval secrets during the Cold War.
The play looks at the incident from the point of view of the Krogers’ best friends and neighbours living in a bungalow opposite.
A spokesman for the Menston Thespians said: “This method of staging brings the audience so close to the actors that they feel they are present in the house in which these dramatic events are taking place and as such it is ideal for this powerful and emotional play.”
The play runs from Thursday to Saturday, May 26 to 28 at 7.15pm.
Tickets cost £8 and can be purchased at Menston Post Office or on (01943) 874284.
