The future of Ilkley Carnival looks more assured after organisers revealed a profit from this year’s event.
Organisers say about 7,500 people attended the event on May 2, with gate takings up 50 per cent on 2010 to help make a profit of £4,000.
The carnival made a £3,000 loss last year, for the first time in its 15-year history. But Andrew Stacey, chairman of the carnival committee, warned the event could still be in jeopardy if more volunteers do not come forward to help.
He said the success of this year’s carnival and the money made – which will be invested into the community – was “exhilarating”, but admitted the small team of organisers were left exhausted by their efforts to set up the event.
Mr Stacey is now appealing for help to organise next year’s carnival.
“Work will start on planning the 2012 carnival in July, so we would like to ask again for anyone interested in helping us deliver another hugely successful carnival event to get in touch with any of our committee members,” he said.
“For all it was exhausting this year with such a small team, it was hugely exhilarating and we all felt a great sense of achievement and pride in making it happen for our local community.”
Anyone interested in volunteering to help is asked to contact Andrew Stacey on 07951 890836.
