Bradford City supporters have condemned “sick individuals” who posted Facebook taunts about the Bradford City fire in the week of the 26th anniversary of the disaster.
As civic dignitaries gathered to remember 56 people killed in the blaze, “jokes” and offensive comments appeared on the Halifax Against Racism Facebook page.
No-one at the group was available for comment, although a member posted on Facebook to distance it from the comments saying the account had been hacked.
The sick comments have been condemned by supporters.
One, who contacted the Telegraph & Argus but did not want to be named, said: “I look at a lot of message sites to find out what is going on with the club and somebody had put a link on an official site to this Facebook site.
“Whoever runs this particular page has said that someone has hacked the account but these comments are stupid and crass.
“They are sick individuals posting this, particularly on the website of Halifax Against Racism, which is supposed to bring communities together.”
Many of the offensive comments were removed shortly after they appeared on the site. But more had been posted throughout Wednesday – the anniversary of the Valley Parade disaster.
Steve Gorringe, a spokesman for Shipley Bantams supporters’ group, said: “I think it is sad that people do not understand what they are doing. I would imagine that that the people who are doing this are young children who don’t know anything about what happened on that day.
“But it says more about them than it does about Bradford City.”
