A Walk for Justice, a football tournament and a civic reception are among the events taking place during Bradford Refugee Week, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Refugee Convention.
The programme of arts, cultural and educational events from June 20 to 26 celebrates the contribution of refugees to Bradford and encourages a better understanding between communities.
“Bradford has a proud tradition of welcoming people from across the world, particularly those who have fled their home countries as a result of persecution on account of their beliefs, race or religion,” said Bradford Refugee Week chairman Beatrice Botomani.
“Refugee Week celebrations arise from a coming together of members of refugee and asylum seeker communities and those working among them.
“There is so much misinformation circulating about refugees and asylum seekers that it is sometimes hard to work out what is reality and what is myth. This year’s programme is packed with information, including personal testimonies, to help figure out the facts from the fibs. All events are free.”
A taster will take place at Bradford Mela on June 12, involving music and dance performances by local refugees and asylum seekers.
The official launch event is at Kala Sangam’s premises, St Peter’s House, Bradford, on June 20, when people who have sought sanctuary in Bradford will talk about their experiences, followed by dance and drama, including a performance by children depicting a child’s experiences during the asylum process.
