Ram-raiders who stole a cash machine from a Bingley shop caused about £30,000 of damage after repeatedly driving a car into the shutters.

Owner Raj Singh, 33, said he was “disgusted and angry” at the raid, which destroyed a suspended ceiling, damaged refrigerators, and left two aisles of goods scattered and damaged on the floor of the Nisa Local store, in Swan Avenue, Eldwick.

The masked burglars then towed away a cash machine using a 4x4 vehicle.

“It was horrible, I just thought oh my god, how do we start cleaning this up,” said Mr Singh.

“I’m disgusted, I am trying to do something for the community, trying to help the community out, I don’t understand why they would want to do it to us.

“They are just thieves, I feel disgusted and angry. We’ve had to clean up, local people and my staff have been helping, local teenagers have come in and helped.

“It’s not the best of feelings. But you’ve got to get on with it, I’m going to carry on trading, we have to be strong.”

Mr Singh said the shop had only been open for four and a half months before the raid, which happened in the early hours of Sunday.

He said CCTV footage appeared to show three men wearing balaclava masks pull the cash machine out of the shop and along the road.

Residents who live near the shop said sparks could be seen flying from the cash machine as it was dragged along the road, said Mr Singh.

“It’s a brand new shop,” he said. “Everything’s brand new, it’s like starting all over. We’ve got a good reputation and for someone to do this, they are trying to knock us off, but we will carry on.

“It’s quite affluent (in Eldwick) and people are not like that round here, it shows it doesn’t matter where it is, people will just still do what they want, if they want to commit a crime they will do it.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to a general store on Swan Avenue, Bingley at just before 1am on Sunday following reports a cash machine had been stolen using a vehicle.

“Officers are now investigating the incident which occurred after a silver 4x4, believed to be a Mitsubishi Shogun, was used to pull a cash machine from the wall at the store and tow it away.”
