The directors of a development of retirement flats have objected to plans by Morrisons to sell alcohol at a new store in Ilkley.

A letter on behalf of the board of directors of The Lawns wants changes to the application.

The Bradford-based chain is to open its first convenience store on the former Bradford College site of Bridge House in Bolton Bridge Road and has applied to Bradford Council for permission to sell alcohol between 6am and midnight every day.

But several residents have written to the Council to complain, with bosses of The Lawns among the complainants.

Their letter says: “The Lawns is a development of retirement apartments and none of the residents here is under the age of 55, indeed most are well beyond that age “Thirteen of the apartments face towards the proposed development and all have bedrooms which would most certainly be affected by noise from the store. This could be particularly serious if alcohol is involved, even if the sales are for consumption away from the premises.”

The board of directors wants the sale of alcohol limited to between 9am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Morrisons says all its staff will be trained to sell alcohol while CCTV will be used on the premises.

Meanwhile, owners of Le Bistrot Pierre in the former Crescent Hotel on the corner of Brook Street and Leeds Road in Ilkley have applied for a licence to sell alcohol and provide entertainment from 10am to 12.30am Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 2am Friday and Saturday.

But residents living near the new restaurant have drawn up a petition objecting to the licences saying there will be too much noise and disturbance from people leaving the restaurant late.
