Organisers of a pioneering health programme set up to improve the well-being of Asian women in Bradford are hoping to run the scheme for a second year.

The Get Fit For Life project, run by the Asian Cultural Association, was started last year for women in the city aged 25 and over.

The programme included exercise sessions, healthy eating classes, advice from health advisors and walks in Bradford parks.

Riffat Shah, who founded the association in 1994, said the scheme was initially intended for around 30 women but more than 100 took part, with some having to be turned away.

She said: “The women were able to relax, exchange ideas and make new friends.

“They became more healthy and they got rid of their depression and anxiety. They came out of isolation.

“They became confident and they have realised the benefit of walking.

“They were able to control ailments like blood pressure and diabetes. They became more cheerful and more balanced.”
