An 11-year-old girl was in hospital last night with serious injuries after a hit-and-run incident.
Police said a Seat Leon was driven from the scene after the girl was struck in Haworth Road, Heaton, Bradford, at its junction with Lynfield Drive, at around 4pm yesterday.
The car was later found abandoned in nearby Sunny Brow Lane.
The girl was in Bradford Royal Infirmary last night receiving treatment for injuries police described as serious but not life-threatening.
The road was sealed off by police carrying out investigations into the evening.
Councillor Imdad Hussain (Lab, Heaton) said he was a friend of the family of the young victim.
"“My thoughts go out to the family,” he said. “Let’s hope she pulls through OK. “One of her relatives is a good friend of mine.”
"The father of Aanisah Rashid, a young girl killed in a car crash on a stretch of Haworth Road in 2009, successfully campaigned for speed cameras on the road. They were installed earlier this year.
Coun Hussain said: “It’s very sad that so soon after the speed cameras were installed that me and
Councillor Rizwan Malik campaigned hard for that we have another serious incident in Haworth Road. “The traffic has been very slow and calm in the area. “I am very saddened such an incident has taken place.”
Councillor Sajid Akhtar (Con, Heaton) said: “We hope she gets well soon. “There was the accident in the area about two years ago where a girl was killed – it’s not far away from where this happened.
"It is quite shocking. "I would encourage people to drive carefully. “The people there are happy the cameras have been installed. “Things have got better and this has come out of the blue.”
Abid Awan, cashier at the Chellow Heights Service Station in Haworth Road, said traffic had been “jammed” after the accident and said his customers had told him ‘Someone got hit by a car’.
A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
