A probe into how a firefighter came to be seriously injured while working at Bingley fire station, is under way.
The Health and Safety Executive has been called in to investigate the circumstances in which the senior firefighter was found at the bottom of a fire engine inspection pit.
The incident happened on March 1 while he was carrying out routine duties, said a West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman.
A full investigation is ongoing into the precise circumstances.
The fire service spokesman said: “He has made tremendous progress since the accident and he is now recovering at home.
“West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has provided support to the firefighter and his family since the accident, and the whole brigade sends their warmest wishes for a quick recovery.”
An HSE spokesman confirmed there had been an incident on March 1 but said that it was unable to comment at this stage of the investigation.
Andy Imrie, secretary of the West Riding branch of the FBU, said the union had been informed of the incident.
“We can’t release information at present because of the ongoing investigation,” he said. “It was a serious incident which happened.”
The Telegraph & Argus understands that the firefighter was for a period on the critical list in hospital.
He was found at the bottom of the pit where he had been lying for some time before he was discovered.
It is also believed that the fire station was closed for a short period for a preliminary investigation into what had happened.
