Supermarket giant Morrisons has submitted plans for hundreds of new parking spaces at its Bradford headquarters.

More than 2,500 staff work at Hilmore House, in Gain Lane, Thornbury, and residents in the area have complained about workers parking outside their homes since it opened in 2006.

The site has 1,087 parking spaces and the company is now seeking planning permission to add a single-storey deck above one parking area to accommodate 356 more vehicles.

Councillors in the area have supported the move.

Councillor Mohammed Shafiq (Lab, Bradford Moor) said: “I have dealt with so many people regarding visitors to Morrisons parking on grass verges and outside homes. I think residents will welcome this.”

Councillor Riaz Ahmed (Lib Dem, Bradford Moor) said: “Parking has caused havoc for residents. Hopefully this problem will be eradicated, though we as a society have to work to taking out cars and using public transport or walking.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Morrisons is an expanding business. The parking deck would be positioned above the existing western car park, however it would not exceed the height of the existing surface road along Gain Lane.

“Through careful planning we would reduce the impact of construction on existing parking arrangements and, if approved, we would hope to have the decked car park completed early next year. We have been in consultation with residents regarding the plans and the feedback has been extremely positive.”
