Computer-savvy criminals are now scrutinising social network sites for clues to homes they can target in burglaries, police in Bradford have warned.

The would-be burglars are checking up on Facebook, Twitter and other easily-accessible sites to see when properties might be vacant.

And they are latching on to site members who give details away about their holidays, trips, homes and possessions.

Police today warned social-site users to be careful.

Inspector Esther Hobbs, of the Bradford Safer Neighbourhoods Partnership, said police sent out crime prevention messages on forums such as Facebook and Twitter. She said: “Most people have access to social network sites, but some can unwittingly advertise when their premises are going to be left vacant.

“People should be mindful about what they post on their sites, or what photos and pictures they put on.”

Insp Hobbs’s warning was part of a raft of advice police in Bradford are offering to help householders stay crime-free in the summer months.
