Scores of swimmers and their families were at Rhodesway Pool in Allerton last night, protesting against its closure, which is believed to be imminent.
The Bradford Dolphin Swimming Club was having what could have been its final session at the pool last night if members of the club are correct in their belief it is to shut on Monday as a result of Government cuts.
Club committee member Donna Patrick said: “I’m so pleased so many people have come forward. I’m really glad, especially the children. It’s for the community, for the Dolphins. A lot of clubs use it. I would be furious if it closed, devastated. There’s nothing much in Allerton as it is.”
Anthony and Christine Bairstow, of Clayton, attended the protest because one of their grandaughters swims at the pool regularly as part of the Dolphins club.
Mr Bairstow said: “We would be absolutely devastated if it closed, where else can they go, it is a community resource.”
Phil Barker, Bradford Council’s assistant director for sport and leisure services, said discussions were ongoing about keeping the pool as a community asset, but if this was not possible the pool would close on a date which has not yet been decided.
