A group established to represent people opposed to a waste treatment plant in the district has held its first meeting.

Spokeswoman Rosemary Jay, of Low House Farm Court, Silsden, said a petition objecting to Bradford Council’s proposals had now been signed by more than 1,000 people.

In February, it was revealed that two fields in Silsden had been shortlisted as being suitable for a waste treatment facility.

No formal planning application has been submitted.

Miss Jay said: “We’re going to continue with the petition, as a lot of people still aren’t aware of what is going on. We’re sure most people in Silsden will want to object.”

Craven ward district councillor Adrian Naylor was among those present at the action group meeting.

He said he had initially been told the district council would make an expert available to inform residents what could be expected if a waste plant was developed on the site between Keighley Road and Belton Road. But he had now learned that this would not be happening.

He said it meant local people were at a disadvantage, because they still had no precise details about what was being planned.

Andrew Marshall, Bradford Council’s planning strategy manager, said: “The proposals for the waste sites have been well covered in the local media and we held two well-attended drop-in sessions in Keighley and in Silsden to give out information and receive comments.
