A 37-year-old man could be locked up indefinitely for a depraved and ferocious revenge attack on a woman he lured to his home.

Munnavar Khan was convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court yesterday of causing his victim grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was cleared of two offences of assault by penetration.

Judge Peter Benson remanded Khan back into custody so he can see a psychiatrist and a probation officer.

But he warned him he faced “a very substantial” prison sentence.

Branding it a very disturbing case, Judge Benson said “the nature and ferocity of the attack” meant he was commissioning a psychiatric report that would determine the level of danger Khan posed in the future.

The judge said he might sentence him to an indefinite period behind bars as Imprisonment for Public Protection.

During the trial, the jury heard that Khan went on the run for five years after attacking the woman at his home in Warley Drive, Bradford Moor.

Khan, who was on bail at the time, failed to appear at the Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing on January 23, 2006. A warrant was issued for his arrest but it was not executed until December last year.

Khan, who worked as a scientist in Holland for several years, blamed an intruder for attacking the woman.

But the court heard he plotted revenge because he blamed her for giving drugs to a man he knew who went on to harm himself with a knife.

He lured his victim to his home by saying he had a TV set she could have and attacked her without warning.

She was punched and kicked unconscious and woke in hospital. She suffered severe bruising and serious internal injuries.

Blood was smeared round the living room and found on a broken broom handle and a vacuum cleaner.

Khan is due to be sentenced in July.
