Staff at Bradford’s RSPCA Centre say they have reached crisis point after being inundated with unwanted cats and kittens.
Twenty-four cats were brought into the Mount Street animal home last week, bringing the total number at the centre to almost 100.
The week before, five cats were found new homes, but another 17 were brought into the refuge.
Deputy centre manager Alison Belcher said: “It’s never-ending at the minute. Kitten season used to be March to September, but now it’s all year round. We are having cats dumped on us, but there’s nowhere to put them. We have no choice but to try and sort the problem out, it puts a lot of pressure on staff.
“Even when we are adopting one cat out, it may have come in with a litter of kittens, so it doesn’t solve the problem. We are really, really desperate.
“We have a lot of friendly cats available for rehoming in a variety of colours and ages. They all have their own characteristics and would make good pets.
“Also, if someone has lost their cats, they should come down and see if any of them are here.”
Claire Kendall, the centre’s cattery supervisor, said of the 24 cats brought in last week, 14 had been abandoned.
“A kitten found by a Council worker was brought in and we have got kittens that have been born here. It’s getting to crisis point.”
The centre is open from 11am to 3pm on weekdays, except Thursdays, and from 11am to 2.30pm at the weekend.
Cats in need of a new home can be viewed on the centre’s Facebook page or at rspca-bradford.org.uk.
