A new route is being sought for a challenging charity walk over Bingley moorland due to concerns about disturbing the habitat of low- nesting birds.

The 12.5mile ‘Bah-Tat’ walk will be on Sunday, May 8, the same day as the 5.5mile Shipley Stride.

Both walks will raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Shipley Stride, which starts at Bracken Hall, Baildon, at 10am, will see walkers cross the moor and pass Baildon golf course before descending towards Crook Farm caravan park and returning to Bracken Hall.

But the Bah-Tat route, originally planned to leave from Bracken Hall and end at the Cow and Calf rocks on Ilkley Moor, will need to be amended after the owner of the land which forms part of the route raised concerns about the nesting birds.

Macmillan fundraising manager Charlotte Stern said: “It is a fragile time of year for the nesting and hatching of some red and amber listed bird species, where there are concerns relating to conservation.

“It is a public right of way and we could have gone across it if we had wanted but we did not want to endanger the wildlife.

“We are confident we will find a new route, the walking group has worked really hard and is still working hard to find a route that is going to be suitable and take in beautiful countryside.”

Kenneth Allen, a member of the Shipley Stride committee, said the group had so far considered three routes for the Bah-Tat walk and he was sure they would find one that was suitable.

“We are definitely going to find a route, it’s just that we have to avoid this land,” he said. “We’re all working hard to find a new route.”
