Police are hunting a brazen burglar who woke a householder to demand the keys for a Range Rover parked outside after breaking in.

The raider eventually stole a silver Vauxhall Vetra belonging to someone else in the house after threatening the 20-year-old man he had woken.

Detectives have linked the burglary, in Middlebrook View, Fairweather Green, on Friday, February 11, to three similar incidents in Kirklees which occurred in the space of a few days.

Detective Inspector Mark Truelove, of Kirklees CID, said: “These offences are worrying. I am concerned that the suspect has no apprehension about entering someone’s home and asking the occupants for their car keys.

“This is very unusual but also very distressing for victims. We need to apprehend the offender responsible.”

The suspect has been described as white, in his mid to late 20s, about 6ft tall and stocky.

Det Insp Truelove said: “I cannot stress enough how important it is for people to activate their house alarm before going to bed at night, as well as locking all exterior doors when they are at home – whether during the day or at night. In my experience offenders do not generally target homes with burglar alarms. On the rare occasion this might occur, they don’t hang around to search for property.”
