A plan to map out a new future for the famous literary village of Haworth has been launched after English Heritage provided a £15,000 grant to produce a design guide for business and building owners.
The village was placed on the English Heritage “at risk” register last year because of the number of modern shop fronts and the state of the street setts.
The new guide is aimed at helping property owners to protect and revitalise their buildings.
The grant announcement comes as Bradford Council yesterday began work on a four-year £600,000 project to restore the setts along the famous Main Street.
Councillor John Huxley, chairman of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council, said: “This is excellent news. Anything positive we can do to make the visitor experience better and to put the village in context must be good.”
Mike Hutchinson, of Haworth Village Association, said: “With the economic climate as it is, cost will be a big factor. But I think people will take it on board with some help and guidance.”
Jon Ackroyd, a Council conservation officer, said: “The Council is seeking to reinforce the special character of Haworth Conservation Area and further develop the local economy through a series of initiatives.”
