A 20-year-old man, accused of wounding a vulnerable 94-year-old woman at a Bradford care home, is also alleged to have sexually assaulted her, it has been revealed.
Scott Sorby appeared before the city’s magistrates yesterday on a series of charges connected to the care home incident and other alleged offences, including robbery.
He was remanded in custody to appear at crown Court, via video link, next month.
The pensioner suffered severe head injuries during the incident at her ground floor flat at the Rosewood Court care home in Shakespeare Close, Barkerend, Bradford, during the evening of Friday, January 21.
She remains in Bradford Royal Infirmary where she is in a stable condition.
Sorby was arrested in Wakefield on Thursday and appeared in court yesterday before District Judge Susan Bouch.
Slim Sorby, who was unshaven and has short, dark hair, was handcuffed to a security officer during the five-minute hearing. Two other officers were present in the secure dock.
He confirmed his name and date of birth to the court and gave his address as a hostel in Bradford Road, Cleckheaton.
Sorby, who was wearing a dark blue polo-neck top and dark casual trousers, cast his eyes down as he sat in the dock. Two of his brothers sat at the back of the court during the hearing.
Sorby is charged with burglary, wounding with intent and sexual assault at the care home on January 21.
He is also accused of two robberies, at a store in West Park, Leeds, on January 22 and January 23, and burglaries in Shipley on January 22 and at West Park on January 25. The charges were not put to him during the brief hearing.
Prosecutor Paul Ramsay asked for the case to be sent to the Crown Court.
Sorby’s solicitor, Yousuf Khan, said his client was remanded in custody. He made no application for bail.
Judge Bouch told the defendant he had been charged with a matter that had to be tried at the Crown Court and she was sending the case there to be dealt with. She remanded Sorby in custody.
