A short film starring two Bradford actors has been nominated for an Oscar.
While the focus of the pre-awards hype is on The King’s Speech, partly filmed at Bradford’s Odsal stadium, and 127 Hours, co-written by Keighley’s Simon Beaufoy, short film Wish 143 has also been nominated.
It stars Sam Holland, 19, a former pupil at Stage 84 now studying drama at Lancaster University. He plays a 15-year-old boy with a terminal illness who, with only months to live, is granted one wish by a charity.
But David does not want to go to Disneyland or meet a Premiership footballer – what he really wants is to come of age and spend an hour with a naked woman.
The film, which has been nominated in the Short Film Live Category, also stars Bradford actor Dean Andrews, best known for playing Detective Sergeant Ray Carling in police dramas Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes.
He also stars in new ITV drama Marchlands.
Wish 143 has already won several international awards, including the British Independent Film Festival Best Short Award and Palm Springs FilmFest Audience Award.
Also starring Jodie Whittaker and Jim Carter, it was produced as part of BBC Film Network’s Drama Shorts commission and shot in Bristol.
“Sam has the lead role and is hoping to attend the Oscars ceremony,” said Stage 84 principal Valerie Jackson. “Two younger boys, Oliver Arundale and Kalum Johnson, from our school had smaller parts in the film.”
Sam has appeared in Coronation Street and school drama Waterloo Road.
In the Oscars Short Film Live category, Wish 143 is up against short films The Confession, The Crush, God of Love and N Wewe.
