Four pubs in the Bradford district feature in a new guide unveiled yesterday to champion Yorkshire’s heritage inns.

The Cock and Bottle and the New Beehive in Bradford, the Ring O’Bells in Shipley, and the Crown in Addingham are included in the Campaign for Real Ale’s (Camra) book highlighting pubs with special interiors. The Black Bull in Birstall, the Yew Tree in Otley, the Shoulder of Mutton in Northowram and the Old Ship in Brighouse, are said by the guide to have some historical interest.

The book covers Yorkshire and Humber region and features a total of 129 pubs and is part of a Camra initiative to bring greater appreciation to pubs with features of significance.

The Cock and Bottle, a Grade II listed building on Barkerend Road, is described in the book as a “late Victorian gem”.

The New Beehive is another pub helped by a remodelling. The pub in Westgate originates from 1901, but was refurbished in 1936 by William Whitaker & Co, one of Bradford’s leading brewers of the time.

The Ring O’Bells, in Bradford Road, Shipley, dates back to 1841 and is believed to be the town’s oldest pub.

The Crown, in Main Street, Addingham, is a Grade II listed building which was originally a house.

CAMRA says only two per cent of the region’s pubs, out of 6,000, contain interiors of historical significance.

Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem), who is chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, helped unveil the new book at the Garden Gate pub in Leeds, yesterday.

The book’s editor, David Gamston, said: “It will have wide appeal as an enjoyable guidebook, for locals and visitors to Yorkshire alike.”

Yorkshire’s Real Heritage Pubs is available from Camra at camra.org. uk/ shop or from (01727) 867201, priced at £4.99.
