One teenager was fighting for his life last night following a car crash in which another was killed near Leeds-Bradford International Airport – minutes after police called off a pursuit.
The car, a silver Peugeot 106, had been tailed by a marked police patrol car but officers had backed off when it arrived in Otley, because of the way it was being driven.
But just minutes later, the driver of the Peugeot lost control along Otley Old Road, Bramhope, at about 9.30pm on Tuesday and a police helicopter spotted it on its roof in a front garden near to the St Helena’s Caravan Park and the None-Go-By Farm.
An 18-year-old, named locally as Matthew Norman, received fatal injuries, while another 18-year-old, believed to be Jordan Cox, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was in a critical condition last night.
A third teenager, a 19-year-old named locally as Alex Farrell, is also at the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. All three teenagers are from Horsforth.
West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Department and the Independent Police Complaints Commission had been notified of the incident.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle being driven in the area during the time leading up to the collision is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 01924 293047.
