The senior detective who led the investigation has told how police used the latest technology to build the case against the Mahmood brothers.
Detectives trawled CCTV footage which captured Arshed buying petrol and phone records to track the Mahmoods’ movements at the time of the murders.
Sophisticated forensic techniques also proved that the petrol used to start the fire had been bought by them shortly beforehand.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Bottomley said: “Our investigations revealed that a dispute over money led Asjid and Arshed Mahmood to commit this heartless act.
“Their selfish actions have destroyed a family and had a profound impact on local people. The efforts of neighbours to save those in the house were commendable.
“Through meticulous investigative work, CCTV footage and forensic technology, officers were able to connect both men to the scene of the fire.”
