A wheelchair-bound teenager who is “always thinking about other people” has been nominated for an award.
Hassan Nazir, 17, who has congenital muscular dystrophy and is regularly admitted to hospital, speaks out on behalf of his peers and also cares for his mother Nighat, who is receiving treatment for cancer.
He was also involved in making a film with Children in Need about the experiences of young people with life-threatening conditions.
The Bradford Academy student has been nominated for a Young Citizen Award by family support worker Paul Miller, to recognise his contribution to his community.
Mr Miller, of NHS Bradford and Airedale’s Children’s Community Specialist Services, said: “The main thing that strikes me about Hassan is his positivity in spite of his own health.
“He has his own life-limiting condition with multiple hospital admissions, and he can remain positive through all this and he is positive for his mum.
“The time he allocates to others, to provide a listening ear, empathy and understanding towards them, these things make me think of citizenship. The main thing is his positivity, it stands out.
“He’s got a wicked sense of humour and he has been a spokesman for others who have got health challenges. He is always thinking of what he can do to help and always thinking about other people.”
Hassan said he was pleased to have been nominated for an award. “It’s really good,” he said. “I was quite surprised.
“I’m just being myself, it comes naturally to want to help people. When I’m at school there are a few lads like me, with conditions that make their lives a lot harder, they get depressed but that’s boring, so I like to try to make them laugh.”
The Bradford Council-run awards recognise the achievements of young people in five categories – Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Wellbeing.
Two awards will be made in each category, one for children under 11 and one for young people aged 11 to 25, at an awards ceremony at St George’s Hall on Wednesday, March 9.
To put forward an inspirational young person for an award phone (01274) 433582 or visit bradford.gov.uk for a nomination form.
Nominations should be sent to Cain Lewis, Bradford Integrated Youth Service, 1 City Road, Bradford, BD8 8ER, before Thursday, January 27.
