A community was left in shock after the body of a 64-year-old man was discovered on an embankment in Bingley. Police were called to the scene near the junction of Crosley Wood Road and Kingsway, in Bingley, at about 7.30am yesterday following the discovery.
Road closures were in place as police cordoned off the junction to allow forensics officers to investigate the scene, opposite a block of social housing flats.
By late morning many of the cordons had been lifted, while one remained around a bus stop and an embankment opposite a block of flats.
West Yorkshire Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and it had been passed to the coroner.
The man has been named locally as Jon Buchanan.
Alan Gibson, 57, said he was his neighbour in a block of flats in Crosley Wood Road, Bingley.
He said: “We are all very sorry that he’s gone. He was a nice bloke – he got on well with everybody really.
“I will miss him.”
One nearby resident, who did not want to be identified, said: “I thought they were cordoning off the road because it was icy.
“I let my dog out and the gate wasn’t shut right and I noticed there were police everywhere and an ambulance and the road was cordoned off.
“I saw the coroner’s van go past about 15 minutes ago.
“It’s quite a close-knit community and everyone knows people.”
A resident in Crosley Wood Road, who did not want to be identified, said: “My nephew was supposed to go to school and the police told us that we could bring him up this way so we had to take him the long way around.
“They just said that they found a body this morning. My sister rang me up and asked if I was OK because they thought it might have been me.”
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to an embankment near the junction of Crosley Wood Road and Kingsway, in Bingley, at about 7.30am this morning after the body of a 64-year-old local man was discovered.
