A woman has called for a change to “dangerous” zebra crossings in Ilkley after suffering a couple of near misses.
Dorothy Ray said getting across Brook Street had become a “lottery” and said she was concerned it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously injured or killed.
The crossings at the top of the road have caused controversy for more than a decade with many people claiming they are dangerous and difficult for both pedestrians and motorists.
And now Mrs Ray has told Ilkley Parish Council she has had enough after her near misses and wants something done.
The 56-year-old shop assistant said she had witnessed other near misses and problems while observing the two crossings, which stretch across four lanes of traffic with an island in the middle.
“In my experience, the zebra crossings are very dangerous,” she said.
“I’ve nearly been mown down on them so many times and in one week before Christmas I was narrowly missed twice and I thought ‘I’ve just had enough’.”
Council chairman Councillor Brian Mann told Mrs Ray her concerns would be passed on to the council’s roads safety committee, Bradford Council’s Highways Department and police Inspector Sue Sanderson.
