A pilot scheme to tackle drugs in Bradford is due to get under way this week.
The multi-agency scheme aims to raise community awareness of how drug dealing can be reported confidentially and how the police and partners can act upon it.
The effort will focus initially on the West Bowling area where only four calls out of 100 to Crimestoppers are about drugs, despite it being identified as a priority issue for residents.
To encourage more people to come forward, a drug information event is being held at 6pm tomorrow at Newby Primary School.
Mike Latham, the school’s head teacher, and Inspector Darren Minton, of the Neighbourhood Policing Team, are co-ordinating the project.
Insp Minton said: “This is a joint piece of work between the three local primary schools, the police, Bradford Council, Crimestoppers, My BD5, Bradford Trident and local faith groups.
“Central to this project, however, is the people who live in West Bowling.
“We need them to stand up for their community and report drugs to us.”
He said posters were being delivered to residents by officers which would provide help for them.
Mr Latham said: “The support of Madni Masjid, St Stephen’s Church, community leaders and partner agencies has been exceptional. By working with the community I am convinced we can bring about a long-term change in West Bowling and with it a safer environment for local families.”
Anyone who suspects drug dealing in their area, or has any information relating to drugs, should contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
