Built between 1907 and 1910 for a local quarry master, Lyndhurst has been the current owners’ home for almost 30 years.

“The main features which attracted us to the property were the outside space and the aspect. In addition to the double garage, there is parking for nine or ten cars,” say the owners.

“We had three young children when we moved here and Lyndhurst was a perfect size. The five bedrooms gave us the space for a room for each of the children, plus a home office.”

From the outside, it’s hard to imagine that the house has five bedrooms, thanks to a rear extension built by a previous owner in the early 1970s. As the house grew, the huge garden shrunk a little, when in 1972 an area containing an orchard and chicken huts was sold off.

“They built three modern houses there, but the garden is quite private and not overlooked. At that time, they also built a double garage and had the remaining garden landscaped.

“The garden is still large, mainly lawned and flat, which makes it easy to maintain. It’s ideal for a young family, with football, cricket and tennis always on the agenda.”

When the owners bought Lyndhurst in 1983, they made several alterations to the layout, including knocking through to extend the kitchen, allowing them to have a dining area with patio doors to the back garden.

They also built an en-suite to the master bedroom and added a living flame fire and new fireplace in one of the reception rooms.

“This work was done during the first year of our living here. Considering we had three small children, everything went remarkably smoothly.

“In the second reception room was a Sixties stone fireplace which we replaced five years ago with a modern marble one, and had a solid oak floor installed at the same time.”

This is a home with a great deal of charm and attractive features. On the ground floor is a porch with tiled floor leading into the hallway, off which is a lounge with marble fireplace and stripped oak flooring.

The dining kitchen is a great size for family meals, being more than 20 feet long, with a range of base and wall units, split-level double oven, breakfast bar and plumbing for a dishwasher. The floor is tiled and there are patio doors to the back garden.

The second reception room, with its bay window, has an attractive period style fire surround and living flame gas fire.

Also on the ground floor is a utility room with access to the back garden, and a cloakroom with tiled floor and part-tiled walls.

Upstairs is the master bedroom, which has fitted wardrobes, stripped pine floor and en-suite tiled shower room with vanity unit, WC and bidet.

Three of the four remaining bedrooms have fitted wardrobes, while the family bathroom has a coloured suite, shower over the bath and part-tiled walls.

The owners say: “The large kitchen has always been the hub of the house and has to be our favourite room, but the best thing about the house is the garden, either tending to the plants or sitting in the sunshine.

“The gardens are surrounded by trees, which gives us plenty of seclusion to enjoy relaxing there. The garden is very much as it was when we bought the house, and is very easy to maintain – only lawnmowing and weeding are necessary.”
