A man in his 20s was killed and another left fighting for life in hospital after a horror crash in Bradford.

The pair were in a black Ford Focus which went out of control in Halifax Road, Buttershaw, shortly before 4am yesterday.

The car, which was travelling towards Bradford from Shelf, crashed near traffic-light-controlled roadworks which have closed one carriageway. It hit the corner of The Sunshine Sandwich shop causing extensive damage to the driver’s side before coming to a stop at an angle in the middle of the road. The offside front wheel was ripped off by the force of the collision.

Three fire crews worked to free the men from the car and gave them first aid before paramedics arrived and took over.

Police officers closed the road for several hours to allow accident investigators to examine the scene, cordoning off a large stretch of road enclosing the wrecked car which had come to rest outside the New Furnace pub.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident and such was the damage to the car, officers have yet to confirm whether the dead man was the driver or the passenger.

The man who survived was last night described as being in a critical condition and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

Both men are from Bradford but police were not releasing their names until relatives had been informed.

Witnesses and anyone who saw the car being driven shortly before the crash should contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police on (01924) 293047.
