Keighley writer Simon Beaufoy looks set for Oscar success a second time around after teaming up with director Danny Boyle on new film 127 Hours.
Two years ago Mr Beaufoy won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Slumdog Millionaire, which won a total of eight Academy Awards.
Now the writer, who wrote smash hit comedy The Full Monty, has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his screenplay for 127 Hours, which he co-wrote with director Danny Boyle.
The film, which is in its first week of release, also has nominations for Best Actor for leading man James Franco and Best Score. The Golden Globes ceremony, seen as a pre-runner to the Oscars, is held in Los Angeles this Sunday. The Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 25, with the ceremony, which James Franco will co-host, on Sunday, February 27.
Based on the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston, 127 Hours looks at his remarkable attempt to save his life after falling into an isolated canyon in Utah in 2003. Alone and with one arm trapped by a fallen boulder, he had to perform DIY surgery with a blunt penknife to save his life. The film, adapted from Mr Ralston’s autobiography Between a Rock and a Hard Place, follows the climber’s mental and physical struggle as he works out how to survive and, amid hunger-induced hallucinations, reflects on friends, lovers, family and two hikers he met before his accident, who he fears may become the last two people to see him alive. Mr Beaufoy, 44, researched Mr Ralston’s story while going climbing with him. They went to the Blue John Canyon where the accident took place, and saw the boulder still in place.
