The final part of a £4.5m redevelopment of Bradford Grammar School has been unveiled.

A glass ‘Learning Link’ corridor connecting the new atrium with the school library and main buildings was opened yesterday.

It connects the central access point with a new three-storey building dedicated to chemistry and social sciences, the Kenneth Robinson building and the Clarkson building.

The project, which expands the school’s sciences facilities, owes much to the vast investment of millionaire former pupils, including a £1m gift from a mystery donor.

Roger Evans, a former pupil who now lives in California, paid for the Learning Link with a $1m donation.

It was the second time Mr Evans, who is also a patron of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, had donated $1m to the school after he funded a new sixth form centre a decade ago.

Stephen Davidson, the school’s headmaster, said: “The school was in a position to fund this development entirely from its own resources, thanks to an Old Bradfordian who donated over £1m, which along with a further gift of $1m from Roger Evans put us in an exceedingly strong financial position.”

He said the redevelopment showed the school’s commitment to excellence in science.

Mr Davidson said: “We believe the opportunity to follow separate courses in chemistry, biology and physics, taught by specialists to at least GCSE level for every boy and girl, is of fundamental importance.

“Our £4.5m project had this aim at its core.”
