A new club has been set up to keep Polish traditions alive in Bradford.
Already about 30 people have joined the group, which has links to the city’s well-established Polish Veterans’ Association.
The new group has been welcomed by members of the 41-year-old Association, which is still thriving.
However, the increasing average age of the Association’s members has led to some concern about future membership numbers. The Association’s co-ordinator Romani Piizon said: “Our problem is that we are getting older.
“We want our history to stick which is why it’s so important to have this new intergenerational and historical society set up.
“As new Poles arrive in the UK, they are keen to learn about the Polish community and our heritage which is a good thing.
During the days of Communism this would not have been allowed.
“As people get older, the opportunity for relaying this information is running out so we have to make the most of opportunities like this one.”
Mrs Piizon said the new group had already met several times at its base in Edmund Street, in the city centre.
She said the group was also keen to trace Polish family histories in the city.
In the future, social networking websites could be used to raise the club’s profile. Mrs Piizon added: “There are lots of plans including starting a Facebook and organising exhibitions in the future so the wider community can come and enjoy and find out about our heritage.
“We are lucky to have such an active and enthusiastic generation who want to do this.”
