Crossbow Cannibal Stephen Griffiths – who once posed bare-chested to show off his muscles – has been reduced to “skin and bone” following a two-month hunger strike.

The 41-year-old has shut himself off in his own world at a prison health wing, where he receives no visitors and does not want to talk to anyone, the Telegraph & Argus has been told.

Griffiths, given three whole life jail terms for the horrific murders of Bradford sex workers Susan Rushworth, Shelley Armitage and Suzanne Blamires, is detained in the health care centre at category A Wakefield Jail, where he has been on hunger strike for two months.

A prison service source said Griffiths was now “skin and bone.”

The source said: “He doesn’t look anywhere near as big as he did in the photo where he is bare-chested and showing off his muscles.

“He has been on hunger strike for a couple of months – he didn’t even have his Christmas dinner. He has lost a lot of weight.

“But although he is not accepting food, he is drinking fluids. He is drinking water and he may get given a tea bag, though people have to be careful what he is given because he tried to choke himself on a plastic bag.

“Because he is taking liquids, there are no great concerns for his health at this stage.”

The source told how Griffiths had shut himself off from other inmates and staff at the prison, the largest maximum security jail in western Europe, whose inmates have included Charles Bronson, Michael Sams, Robert Black, Roy Whiting and David Bieber, who murdered Bradford police officer Ian Broadhurst.

The source said: “One or two people have tried talking to Griffiths, but he doesn’t want to know.

“He is a difficult prisoner, in that he has no interest in interacting.

“He’s in his own little world. He spends most of his time just lying on his bed. He does go to the association room on the health care wing, but he just sits in a chair and doesn’t talk to anybody. If anyone approaches him, he tells them to go away.

“He has had no visitors. Even his legal team had consultations with him via a video link.”

Griffiths is on constant suicide watch following several attempts to take his life, which included a suicide bid in June when he was found unconscious in his segregation cell at the prison, with a sock tied round his neck.

The Prison Service has said it monitors the physical and mental health of prisoners who refused food, but cannot force-feed those who are considered to be mentally capable.

Detectives plan to interview Griffiths at a later date about the possibility of him being linked to the murders or disappearances of other women.
