A local mental health trust has warned money worries are one of the biggest triggers for stress – with people being vulnerable at this time of year.

More than half the population have credit card debt and owe £58bn in total, according to a Bank of England survey.

Statistics suggest that as many as 40m people in the UK are suffering from some form of anxiety due to debt.

Simon Gelsthorpe, Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Bradford District Care Trust, suggested that while people were not always able to change their situation, they could change their response to it.

He said: “We know that one in four people will be affected by mental health problems at some time in their life. Problems are often heightened over the festive period and financial pressures can have an impact at this time of year.

“Many people turn to family and friends in times of stress which can be a big help, but others find it difficult to discuss things that are troubling them.

“The good news is stress can be managed and people can help themselves before reaching the point where they become overwhelmed. A few simple strategies such as staying calm and looking for the right help can really make a difference. If you continue to be overwhelmed, talk with your GP.”

A new survey by the bank First Direct has revealed debt and pensions were the biggest financial regrets in Yorkshire in 2010.
