Excluded youngsters in Bradford will be helping older people in their communities – thanks to a £50,000 Lottery award.
Charity Ummid, which works with more than 100 disadvantaged young people and offenders, won the funds in ITV’s The People’s Millions competition for its Triple C project.
The scheme, which stands for community, care and cohesion, will see participants help older people with tasks such as gardening, shopping, litter-picking and painting fences.
The Lottery funds will be used to buy a disabled-access minibus so the youngsters can organise events for older people in their communities.
Rahat Khan, operations manager for the charity, which has centres in Little Horton, Wrose, Duckworth Lane and Manchester Road, said: “We feel so elated about the whole situation because it’s going to help us provide a service for the more vulnerable young people and enable them to work with the communities they live in and the older members who might be a bit isolated.
“We want to get the older and younger generations together. Older people have a lot to give. It’s a brilliant opportunity for us as an organisation and the community to work together. Hopefully we will be able to improve people’s quality of life in some small way.”
The competition, in which the charity went head-to-head with a community group from Withernsea, saw young people at Ummid make banners and use social networking sites to encourage people to vote for their project.
Mr Khan said: “It’s been a brilliant process. We are waiting for the money to be put into our account so we can buy the bus, which will be used to transport young and old.
“If there are other volunteering organisations in the area we will make the minibus available to them as well. These are difficult times so we want to share our resources.”
