Thirty restaurants and takeaways in the Bradford district have been slated for very poor standards of food safety this year.

Any food business in the district can be the subject of a visit by Bradford Council officers and given a star rating of between zero and five.

Bradford’s zero scorers include a number of fast food takeaways, schools, restaurants and cafes. Fourteen businesses have been given the zero rating since August.

Of the 2,307 businesses which serve food in the Bradford district and have been visited by inspectors, more than five per cent – 124 establishments – have scored one star or fewer on their most recent inspections.

For the worst offences business owners can be fined up to £5,000 and sent to prison for up to two years.

One takeaway in the district scored zero when it was visited in August.

According to a report, the inspector found the premises were in a filthy condition.

There was no dedicated basin in the kitchen for washing hands, staff handling food were not wearing clean over-clothing, numerous appliances were in need of a deep clean, a thermometer to monitor food was not working and there was no soap or hygienic hand drying facilities at the wash basin in the toilet. Another report reveals the conditions discovered on an inspection of a takeaway in Bradford which currently has a zero rating Officers found food was left out of temperature control when the business was shut and kitchen work surfaces needed disinfecting.

The inspector also recommended a contract be set up with a pest control specialist.

David Clapham, the Council’s principal environmental health manager, said: “Both have addressed the problems.

“We will visit both businesses in the next few months.

We would encourage everyone to check the star rating at scoresonthe doors.org.uk.”
