Work to build a new park bandstand is set to get under way in the new year, it has been revealed.

The structure, in Haworth Park, would replace the original bandstand that was dismantled in the late 1960s.

The campaign for a replacement bandstand has been running for several years, but has gained fresh momentum after a new planning application was submitted to Bradford Council.

The plan is identical to a £120,000 scheme that won City Hall approval in 2007 but failed to meet the three-year deadline for building work to start.

The project was delayed as campaigners awaited a funding decision from Lottery bosses, who eventually decided not to back the plan.

The campaign for a “performing arts” bandstand is being spearhead by the Friends of Haworth Park, which is part of Haworth Village Trust.

Gillian Hill, chairman of the friends’ group, said: “We were very disappointed not to get Lottery approval. We actually wasted a year making the application in the end.

“We were disgusted with the response and were told it was no use us applying again because we wouldn’t get it. It seems we didn’t have enough heritage.”

She understood that the plan would have no problem getting fresh approval from Council planners and the aim was to start work on a new base sometime after February. It would be placed at ground level.

“We want to get the base completed so it can be used to raise money to help complete the whole structure,” she said.

The roof would be cantilevered and the pillars would be designed in an Edwardian style to fit in with the rest of the park.

Railings would be able to be swung back to make a stage for music, dance and other forms of live performance.

Some funding would come from the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and a number of cash grants had been received including £10,000 from the Ward Investment Fund, from Keighley Area Committee Community Chest and Haworth & Worth Valley Rotary Club, she said.
