When the bat and ball exponents Down Under aren’t engaged in mortal combat over the most prized competition in cricket, it seems they’re keeping themselves busy by tweeting.

The likes of Shane Warne and Michael Clarke are batting for the Aussies, while a host of Englishmen – including Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann – are speaking up for us.

What the players do on Twitter creates almost as many headlines as their on-pitch activities, with Clarke and Kevin Pietersen causing respective stirs with their curious quotes on the social networking site recently.

You can learn quite a lot about some tweeters from their online profiles, especially by glancing through who they follow, with Pietersen’s favourites ranging from Jamie Theakston to Holly Willoughby. You’d have thought Lewis Hamilton would have been a good role model, following recent events.

Vaughan certainly isn’t shy about who takes his fancy, with Suzi Perry, Amanda Holden, Katy Perry and Jacqui Oatley all listed among his watched list. Can’t think why.

Warne follows such hugely popular cultural figures as Victoria Beckham and Piers Morgan, probably out of interest about how other people cope with being immensely disliked up and down the country.

By the time the Ashes are over, though, the whole Australian team might want to subscribe to the Australian 2022 World Cup bid’s Twitter feed to help them learn how to cope with defeat.
