Over a quarter of people who live on the Bracken Bank and Braithwaite estates in Keighley feel unsafe going out at night.

And they have worries about anti-social behaviour, a Bradford Council public perception report reveals.

About a quarter of the people surveyed in Keighley West ward also think their health was poor.

The study also shows that almost half of residents living in Keighley’s Central ward believe those from different backgrounds do not get on well together. They are also unhappy – 61 per cent – with public services.

But the snapshot survey, which involved interviewing 1,372 people face-to-face in Keighley and Ilkley, reveals that the vast majority of people – 91 per cent – are happy with their lot. Only Keighley Central ward, at 78 per cent, is below the Bradford district average of 87 per cent.

And it exposes a big gulf in the number of people who volunteer. Keenest volunteers are people in Ilkley with 44 per cent and in the Worth Valley at 31 per cent.

But it was ‘negligible’ in the three Keighley wards.

Identified as the main issues for improvement across the area were activities for teenagers, road and pavement improvement and cleanliness of streets.

The survey asked questions about community safety, travel and transport, satisfaction with public services, health and well being, financial exclusion and getting involved.

Inspector Wayne Horner, of the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said they were making progress in tackling anti-social behaviour.

He said: “I would ask residents from the Brackenbank and Braithwaite areas who are concerned about anti- social behaviour to contact us on (01535) 617119.”

The report was going before Keighley Area Committee today when members will be invited to pose questions for a survey in 2011.
