Sixteen young men have just enlisted at the Army’s Bradford recruiting office – bringing the total joining up in the city to 100 this year.
The recruits swore an oath of allegiance ahead of starting their basic training.
The majority have joined The Yorkshire Regiment – the region’s infantry regiment – but others will embark on careers with the Royal Logistics Corps (RLC), the Grenadier Guards and the Royal Artillery.
Ryan Mulvey, 19, of Wrose, Shipley, who has joined the RLC, said: “I have always wanted to join the Army.
“I want to have a full career. I would like to serve my time in Afghanistan. Obviously I don’t want to get hurt but it’s a risk you have to take.”
Anna Stead, of Glusburn, Keighley, whose 16-year-old son Michael has joined The Yorkshire Regiment, said: “I’m very proud. I’m impressed with the commitment he’s shown at the age of 16.”
