British Transport Police have warned children at a Saltaire school that bad behaviour on the trains will not be tolerated.

A new drive has been launched at Titus Salt School by BTP and train company Northern Rail to try and improve student awareness of the need for appropriate behaviour on public transport. A red and yellow card scheme has also been introduced for students who behave badly on trains or travel without tickets.

BTP Inspector Dave Parker, who works closely with Northern Rail, said: “With more than 80 children using a small number of rail services there was always a potential for issues, particularly as often the number of students on the trains exceeded the number of available seats.

“Working with Northern Rail and Titus Salt School, we wanted to determine how the journey could be made more pleasant for the students and other rail passengers and how we could address the issue of ticket monitoring.

“Thankfully the school was incredibly receptive and a partnership was established to address the issues for the benefit of Northern Rail, the students and the wider community.”

A red and yellow card scheme has been introduced in which any students without valid tickets or behaving badly are issued with a yellow card as a warning.

At this stage the school will step in and implement internal sanctions.

If the same student is caught again within the same term they are given a red card.

When that has been presented, they will be referred to officers from the local BTP Neighbourhood Policing Team for further action to be taken.
