A mystery gambler has won a cool £1m at a Bradford bookmakers after he became the first in the country to predict all six numbers in a lottery-based game.
The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, was said to be “shocked” to land the maximum payout from a £1 stake on the 49s game at the Ladbrokes branch in Otley Road, Undercliffe.
The game is a draw that takes place twice a day in which numbers are drawn from balls marked one to 49.
It is the first time a Ladbrokes betting shop customer anywhere has enjoyed such a windfall, making him Ladbrokes’ first shop millionaire.
The lucky punter, who is a regular at the Undercliffe branch, has enjoyed previous success on the 49s game, scooping £10,000 several years ago.
Ladbrokes said it was now keen to offer him a job helping predict results as the Premiership season prepared to kick off.
Staff at Ladbrokes were taken aback at the man’s success, according to Dhyanne White, of Eccleshill, who is deputy manager of Ladbrokes’ Undercliffe branch.
She said: “We are all in shock to be honest. The most I have ever paid out is about £12,000, which was actually on the same game. The jackpot on 49s can be shared, but luckily he was the only winner so he got the million.
“It’s not become general knowledge yet, but the few people who know have been saying ‘oh my God, I wish it was me’.
“I think he is in a bit of shock because you don’t expect it. I do the lottery but I never expect to win”
Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams said: “We knew our number was up when the shop told us of the news. This guy clearly has a unique talent as he’s done it before. Paul The Octopus’s feats are nothing but tiddlers compared to what our guy has done. It’s an incredible win and we salute our very first shop millionaire.”
