New PC Johnny Green is following the footsteps of a much-missed police friend by taking on her beat and badge number in her memory.
PC Green, who has just joined Bingley Neighbourhood Policing Team, wears the 5184 collar number of PC Clare Lyness, who lost her battle with cancer last year.
It was her wish that he would wear it with pride and keep patrolling her beat and fight crime in the town.
Collar numbers are normally retired when an officer dies in service but on this occasion it was agreed that it would be a more fitting tribute if PC Green were to wear it.
PC Lyness spent 25 years making the streets of Bingley and Keighley safer. Her chiefs praised her as a “real thief taker.”
PC Green said: “”I’m very proud to follow in her footsteps with her badge number. I worked with Clare for five years and we were very good friends.”
