The speed limit on one of the main roads into Bradford looks set to be cut by 10mph in a bid to reduce deaths and serious injuries.

Bradford Council has started consulting the public on plans to reduce the speed limit along the A641, through Wyke and Low Moor, from 40mph to 30mph.

At the beginning of this year, Bradford Coroner Roger Whittaker called on the Council to take action during an inquest into the death of former Bradford Bulls coach Eddie McGuinness.

The 43-year-old suffered “non-survivable injuries” after being thrown into the air in a collision as he tried to cross Huddersfield Road, outside the Drop Kick pub, Low Moor, in March last year.

During the inquest, Mr Whittaker said he believed the speed limit on the road should be reduced to 30mph to take account of the number of junctions and traffic lights.

Now the Council says it wants to introduce a 30mph limit “as part of a casualty reduction scheme to lower speeds and thus reduce serious and fatal injuries.”

The new 30mph zone would run from the border with Calderdale to the south, to a point near the Odsal Top roundabout to the north.

That stretch of the A641 Huddersfield Road, which becomes Woodside Road at one point, currently has a speed restriction of 40mph by virtue of orders made in 1963, 1969 and 1977.

In its consultation document, the Council said it considered it “expedient” to make a new order to avoid danger to pedestrians and traffic and to improve amenities of the area through which the road runs.

Councillor David Robinson said: “I am fully supportive of it. It’s common sense and it’s necessary.”

Anyone wishing to object to the proposal should write a letter to arrive no later than noon on Friday, August 20, to the Assistant Director of Corporate Services, Bradford Council, City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY.
