Police are investigating reports of an alleged car jacking.
Residents said their vehicles were not allowed in or out of the Delph Hill estate at Wyke, Bradford, while police investigated the incident.
Police said they were called to the scene in Summer Hall Ings shortly after 3am on Saturday.
A spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of an alleged car jacking.
“The driver reported that he was approached in his black Skoda by a group of people who attacked his vehicle.
“Detectives are still conducting inquiries to establish the full circumstances.”
Police were unable to confirm or deny claims by residents that a firearm had been discharged and said inquiries were ongoing into that.
They were also unable to say whether the attack was targeted.
Detective Inspector Mark Long, of Bradford South CID, said a group of people were in the parked Skoda when they were approached by another group, believed to be on foot.
There was an altercation during which a window of the car was smashed.
The occupants of the vehicle ran off and the car was taken by the other group. It was recovered later that morning.
No-one was seriously hurt in the incident. There have been no arrests but police inquiries are continuing.
Det Insp Long appealed for any witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, to contact Bradford South CID on 0845 6060606, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
One resident said: “The incident led to a major crime scene with residents subject to a lockdown of the estate, where no vehicles were allowed to leave or enter the estate.”
