Hundreds of people visited police stations in the district at the weekend to learn more about life in the emergency services on Saturday.

Open days were held at Javelin House station in Eccleshill and Shipley station to show how officers work and to raise awareness of crime prevention.

Tours of the stations by officers took in intelligence units, gyms, interview suites, briefing rooms and refreshment areas.

There were also demonstrations on defensive techniques used by officers including batons, handcuffs, sprays and taser guns and the chance to see police dogs and horses.

Chief Inspector Steve Thomas, of Airedale and North Bradford Police, said: “The open days are designed to be transparent and show what’s on offer and the range of services that are available.

“It’s also important to awareness of crime prevention and safety.”

Valerie Hollingworth, of Idle, who was at the Eccleshill open day with her two grandchildren, said: “We think it’s been very informative. We came for the children, to find out more about what happens here and to see what else they do.”

Margaret Goodison, of Bolton, was at the event with her six-year-old daughter. She said: “I want to realise the importance of keeping safe. The open day will be helpful to a lot of people.”

Open days will be at Airedale House station, Royd Ings, on Saturday from 11am to 3pm and Trafalgar House, Nelson Street, Bradford, on Sunday from 11am to 3pm.
