A Bradford army commando is planning to trek the Inca Trail to raise money for a cancer charity in memory his mother who lost her life to the disease.
Captain Mick Key grew up in Wibsey and is currently serving at RMB Chivenor in North Devon.
He has challenged himself to raise £3,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support this year before he is deployed to Afghanistan next year and on September 25 he will be travelling to Peru to trek the Inca Trail to raise money for the charity.
The Peru hiking challenge is a ten-day trek climbing steep trails rising to 4,200 metres in diverse mountainous terrain, leading to the legendary Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu.
Captain Key said: “Sadly, cancer touches all our lives and my fundraising is in memory of my mum Margaret who we lost to a brain tumour ten years ago this month. This is especially poignant as sadly my stepfather has also been diagnosed with cancer. My good friend Sev Parkin and I have already completed a coast-to-coast cycle ride in July, 2009.
“We successfully cycled the 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in September and out next challenge is the Inca Trail.
“Macmillan provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support and push for better cancer care.
“It’s a worthy cause, I’m sure, so please help out if you can.”
