The Government spent £3,000 on hiring the venue and a coach to and from Leeds railway station when it held its cabinet meeting in Bradford last month, figures reveal.

The cabinet travelled to Bradford for its first meeting outside Whitehall since the coalition government took office.

A parliamentary question has revealed that £3,029.50 was spent on the venue and costs relating to the Odsal Stadium venue and on coach travel to and from Leeds station.

Scottish National Party MP Angus MacNeil asked the Government how much the trip cost the public purse, including travel and accommodation, venue hire and associated costs, printed materials, and security arrangements.

Francis Maude, Tory party chairman and Minister for the cabinet office, replied: “The central cost of the Cabinet meeting in Bradford was 3,029.50, including venue hire and associated costs. Ministers combined their attendance with visits to services and projects in the area.

“Departments will have incurred additional costs associated with travel to Leeds station but this information is not held centrally by the Cabinet Office.

“The only security provision was that provided by the police and the question of cost is one for the relevant police force.”

Downing Street refused to say how many officials attended along with the 23 MPs in the cabinet.

The cost of a peak standard open-return fare from London to Leeds is £223. A first-class fare is £334.

It means the rail fare for just the cabinet, not including any officials, was at least £5,129 based on the standard fare.

No figure was provided in the parliamentary answer as each department would have been responsible for its own travel bill.
