A whole host of sporting summer activities are on offer during the six-week school holidays to keep children in the district from getting bored.

Young people can try athletics, badminton, canoeing and kayaking, climbing, cricket, dance, fit kids, football, futsal, gymnastics, hockey, karate, netball, rugby, sailing, short tennis, table tennis and trampolining.

Bradford Council’s leisure services section has organised courses and challenges at all of its sports centres and swimming pools for those under 16. There is something for people of all abilities, from beginners to those more experienced in a particular sport or activity.

Councillor the Reverend Paul Flowers, the Council’s executive member for culture, planning and housing, said: “Parents are bound to be hearing those words ‘I’m bored’ during the six weeks holidays so it’s well worth checking out what’s on offer at your local Pool or leisure centre.”

Special junior gyms – which are adult-free zones – are the Tzone at Thornton, the Shokk gym at Keighley and the new Izone at the Richard Dunn sports centre.

Under 16s can stay healthy with interactive bikes, interactive floors and walls, weights, treadmills, bikes and rowing machines and both gyms play the latest music and have TVs.

A new clubactive gym for 11-plus youngsters is now open at Eccleshill Pool where there are interactive bikes and a variety of equipment.

Budding footballers can also perfect their skills on the pitch at a sports centre near them.

All Council-run swimming pools will be open during the holidays and many will host a range of sessions including giant inflatables activities, aqua camps and swim-for-all sessions. Swimmers should ask at their local pool for details.

There will also be multi-sports camps where children can try their hand at a number of games over a week.

Full details of all summer courses can be found at bradford.gov.uk/ summer, or by ringing the community sports development unit on Bradford (01274) 522750.
