Residents, businesses and councillors in Eccleshill have launched a campaign to tackle underage drinking and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Eccleshill Village Steering Group is calling on people to take action by reporting any such behaviour to the police, in a bid to crack down on the problem.

The group held a meeting at Eccleshill Mechanics Institute earlier this week and launched a leaflet campaign aimed at encouraging people to contact the police when they spot any anti-social behaviour, so action can be taken. Councillor Carol Beardmore (Lib Dem, Eccleshill), chairman of Bradford East Area Committee, said people were working together on the steering group to run the campaign after getting to the end of their tether with the situation.

She said: “Local residents and businesses have had enough and won’t put up with it anymore.

“But people do not always report what they see and the police can only act on the information they receive.

“This campaign is asking everyone to take some action. If we want things to change everyone has to take some responsibility.”

Last year the Telegraph & Argus reported how the Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team held meetings with residents in the area after concerns about anti-social behaviour.

They said they had held days of action before but were looking for longer-term solutions.

In addition there were reports of nuisance teenage tearaways riding off-road motorbikes, which led to neighbourhood officers warning their anti-social behaviour would not be tolerated.

There was also a drive to crack down on nuisance motorists in the area with a poster campaign promoting a hotline number and advising residents on how to protect themselves from crime.

Police targeted uninsured motorists and those using vehicles for crime and sent warning letters to persistent offenders who created a nuisance with motorbikes.
